Exposition
Afficher le travail de Karine Savard

PROGRAMMING

From January 13 to February 12, 2022
Galerie R3

As part of La Nuit des idées and in co-production with Vidéographe, Galerie R3 presents the installation Afficher le travail by Montreal artist and researcher Karine Savard. She makes film posters for a living and, in her artistic practice, reflects on her own status as an autonomous worker in the cultural industry by hijacking advertising displays for artistic purposes (billboards, construction site fences, shop windows, etc.).

As part of this project, the artist has designed a series of posters based on video works selected from the collection of the artist-run center Vidéographe, where she completed a research and curatorial residency. These video-pamphlets from the 1970s and 80s deal with the theme of work (the beginnings of union organization, self-management initiatives, workers speaking out, etc.). The posters produced, diverted by anachronism from their usual promotional function, explore how these videos resonate with new contemporary modes of work, such as self-employment or the digital economy.

The installation was shown in the spring of 2021 at the Diagonale center in Montreal and in the fall of 2021 at the Musée d’art de Joliette. The project is now presented in a new form that integrates some of the materials from the previous research, thus making visible the extent of the work leading up to the production of the project itself.

This project was realized with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, Centre Vidéographe, Centre Sagamie, and Centre PRIM.
