Vidéographe and VOX are proud to be copresenting video installations by Bryony Dunne and Anna Grigorian at VOX from October 24 to 28, 2023.

This exhibition seeks to shed light on the colonial and patriarchal structures of oppression that govern our relationships with one another. By combining documentary content with more theatrical approaches to video, the artists propose a surprisingly sensitive and political reflection on violence. Whether aimed at endangered species, as in Dunne’s Surrender Your Horns (2021), or manifesting the persistent and widespread sexism of Armenian culture, as revealed in Grigorian’s Room (Սենյակ) (2021), violence is observed from an empathetic approach as a means of resolving its consequences.

Under the guise of surrealism or a whimsical transcription of the world, these works challenge our perceptions and thus depict the profound challenges marginalized groups and endangered species face.

SYNOPSIS

Anna Grigorian’s experimental project Room (Սենյակ [sɛnˈjɑk] ) reflects on the issues of oppression, violence, and murder cases of women. While the factual data used in the video is directly taken from the realities of Armenia, gender-based oppression and violence reaching physical retaliation and murder are ongoing and widespread, making the work relevant across countries.

BIOGRAPHY

Anna Grigorian is an emerging experimental artist from Armenia, whose art practice is currently based between Canada and Armenia. With a background in sculpture, literature, and photography, her current chosen medium is moving image. Her video work revolves around socio political and economic problems, and examination of power relations, through mixing elements of theater, early cinema, and constructed surreal studio environments.

SYNOPSIS

Après avoir inhalé de la poudre de corne, un Irlandais solitaire se métamorphose de façon kafkaïenne en un homme à tête de rhinocéros. Incarnant à la fois le chasseur et la proie, il nous guide à travers une série de mondes réels et fantastiques. Le contenu documentaire du film se mélange à des séquences évoquant le théâtre de l’absurde, révélant ainsi le sens existentiel de cette tragédie : on pourchasse les rhinocéros dans la vie comme dans la mort.

BIOGRAPHY

Bryony Dunne est une artiste visuelle et une cinéaste irlandaise dont la pratique s’intéresse aux entrecroisements qui unissent documentaire, cinéma, photographie et monde naturel. Les projets qu’elle développe sont fortement orientés vers la recherche et explorent les rapports de force qui existent entre la nature et l’humain, de même que les fantasmes de contrôle qu’entretient ce dernier. Pour entretisser tous ces récits, elle recourt fréquemment à des procédés qui fictionnalisent les faits et qui mettent en scène des futurs imaginaires. Ses œuvres ont été présentées à la galerie Mosaic Rooms (Londres), aux galeries Gypsum et Townhouse (Le Caire), au Irish Film Institute (Dublin) ainsi qu’à DEPO (Istanbul), entre autres lieux. Elle a participé à de nombreux festivals internationaux de films et d’art vidéo tels que le Thessaloniki Documentary Film Festival (Grèce), le Cork International Film Festival (Irlande) et les Rencontres internationales Paris/Berlin. Elle est actuellement artiste en résidence à la Jan van Eyck Academie de Maastricht.
